6 Things I wish I’d known before I signed up for insurance (and the process I went thru to find out)

I recently broke my iPhone 6S Plus screen rendering it useless.  The screen went black and there was no way to turn it on.  It was terrible, but I thought, ‘thank goodness I have iPhone insurance!” You’d think that breaking the phone would be the worst part of this story, but just hold on. Here’s what happened next… and what I learned along the way.

My carrier could care less that I broke my phone

It’s not an overstatement when I say zero sympathy was given to me when I walked into my carrier explaining my broken-phone dilemma. The eyes of my rep literally lit up as she asked if I was interested in ditching the broken phone to “just buy a new one instead.” I think I actually saw the reflection of the dollar signs in her blue eyes.  I politely said “no” and, obviously disappointed, she then proceeded to tell me to call the customer service number for my insurance company – an altogether separate company from my carrier. Yeah, I should have I realized right then that this wasn’t going to be the ‘quick and easy’ process I was promised. I couldn’t even get my new phone at my carrier’s store today, you know, the company I pay the insurance premiums to?! I needed to call the “other” company to handle this.

My deductible on my iPhone insurance was more than I had expected to pay

After leaving my carrier, I immediately called the “other” company only to find out my iPhone insurance required me to pay an additional deductible to get my phone fixed. I explained that I was on the premium insurance plan where I paid $13 a month already.  The man on the other end of the phone commented that this monthly amount only entitled me to have insurance on my iPhone…and that, regardless of what is wrong with my phone, whether it is a broken screen or a crackling earpiece speaker, the deductible to repair it is always the same amount! In my case that was $200! What!? Now not-so-quick-and-easy just became expensive too!

The time it took to get a new phone was longer than I expected to wait

I moved forward with the iPhone insurance company and discovered that the soonest I would get my new phone is 1-2 business days. But wait…today is Friday! I wouldn’t receive it until Monday at the earliest unless I want to pay extra for overnight shipping, another $30! You know I had to bite the bullet on that one, I can’t live without my phone for 3 days! Not-so-quick-and-easy and not-so-cheap just became not-so-convenient too!

I got a refurbished phone…not a new one

Upon receiving my “new” phone from the iPhone insurance company, I noticed that the housing was scuffed. I quickly called, fully expecting them to say, ‘oh no, we’ll send you a replacement right away!’ Um, no. I was informed that the phone replacement I was promised was in fact not a new phone. They had sent me a “certified refurbished device!” I had just paid $230 and waited 3 days to get someone’s USED phone! And I was stuck with this beat up frame!?

The painful data transfer process from my old phone

After all the hoops I went through so far, I thought that surely the biggest hassles were behind me…I was wrong. Because I am “one-of-those-people” who doesn’t like technology or trust my information in the cloud, I didn’t have an iCloud backup of my device…nor did I have a backup on my computer.  When I called to find out how to get all my info on the new phone, I was told I could backup my old device onto iTunes. One problem, my screen doesn’t work! I can’t select the prompts on my phone to even back it up! So, I called my carrier again to see if they could put a new screen on so I can just access the information. I bet you can guess what their response was. “Nope.” Great.

When life became easy again

In my frustration, I called Oops Repair to see if they would be kind enough to replace my screen so I can access the data. They agreed and said they could even do it today! When I got there, they introduced me to OopsCare. For less than half of my deductible with my iPhone insurance and in less than 30 minutes they could replace the screen on my original phone! No data transfer needed. My phone worked like it was never broken!  I hugged the tech, quit my iPhone  insurance, became an OopsCare Member, and will never look anywhere else for my technology needs!

I like easy, I like saving time, and I like saving money. So, I like Oops Repair. You will too. Promise.

Oops of the Week – January 31, 2015

This iPhone 5C was the victim of a “cuteness” accident last week.

The owner was out for her run down by the water front with her Beats earbuds plugged in.  She was jamming out to “This Girl is on Fire” as her iPhone 5C was securely tucked in her arm band. It didn’t take long before she noticed people were looking at her. Thinking that it must be her well-toned body, tanned physique, perfect running form, or her long blonde ponytail swaying as she ran, she whipped her hair a bit, held her chin a little higher, and started running with newfound vigor for her audience. As the run continued, however, the smiles and laughs from both men and women began to trouble her…were they laughing at her rather than admiring her?

She slowed her pace but continued running as she began to make a mental checklist of her apparel placement and choices. She noted nothing out of the norm, so she began to look around to find the source of their now amused looks. That’s when she looked behind her and saw it…the most adorable puppy she had ever seen was running at her heels.

She smiled at the adorable site, but perhaps looking a little too long. As she turned back to face the direction in which she was running, she caught a glimpse of the park bench just as she ran into it, her shin crashing into the seat and her body tumbling across the bench in what seemed to be slow motion.

Embarrassment gripped her as she crashed to the pavement on the other side of the bench, landing directly on her arm where her iPhone was secured.

As she began to take inventory of injuries (other than her pride, of course), the puppy jumped on her lap to playfully and immediately licked her face, instantly helping her forget the scrapes and bruises she had just received.

Unfortunately that adorable puppy could not erase the obliterated screen on her iPhone… but we could!  Only 28 minutes after her arrival, she walked out of our store with her phone as good as new and her new found companion, Trip, at her side!

Oops of the Week: Dec 12, 2014

This iPhone 6 had a nasty fall at the mall. Sneaking to get that perfect shot of little Suzy’s visit with Santa, the owner jerked when she was busted by Santa’s elf trying to take a prohibited picture! The phone hit the floor hard, bounced into Santa’s workshop, and slid to rest…right under Santa’s chair! She took the embarrassing walk to retrieve the phone from its unfortunate resting place as Santa, the elves, and all the other moms and kids in line watching (of course!) only to realize that the screen was as busted as her pride! Thankfully, we were able to replace her screen in 32 minutes and she was back off to her holiday happenings with no one the wiser…except maybe Santa.

The holidays can be a treacherous time! This iPad mini was unable to escape the dangers of Thanksgiving family gatherings and became the victim of the rivalry between Uncle Dan and Uncle Mike in the pre-dinner-football-game-turned-wrestling-match. If only they had seen the iPad mini laying on the floor when their good natured smack talk turned to a contest of physical strength! Fortunately for them (and the owner) we were able to replace the front screen and get it working again…and with a little protective gear for the next family rumble!

Oops of the Week: November 8, 2014

This iPhone 5S took a topple at a Halloween Party, slipping out its owner’s hand while reenacting scenes from the movie in her Maleficent costume. When the owner picked it up, she got a spooky surprise indeed – her screen was cracked! She tried to live with the scary, but not fatal flaw for a few days, but finally gave up and brought it in. As you can see, we not only fixed her up in under 30 minutes, but also transformed her from evil (dark) to good (light)! Welcome back from the dark side and thanks for choosing Oops Repair!

This iPad 4 suffered a fall from the top bunk…

A boarding student at Baylor School, watched it slip from his lap to the not-so-soft ground below his bed.  After a quick trip to OopsRepair, he was back in business doing his regular school work with a new OtterBox Defender to protect it from a future “Oops!” moment!

This iPad 2 suffered the wrath of a jealous text book in the backpack of Chattanooga Christian School high school student.  The backpack got tossed just a little too hard after school…cracking the glass AND the causing the LCD to have fuzzy lines through it!  Darn that 500 page history text book and it’s inferior-learning-tool complex!

On a positive note, our customer walked out with a new Defender OtterBox, that protects the screen with a hard plastic shield that clips on when it’s not in use.  Perfect for kids who throw their iPads in their backpacks!  No other protective case offers this option!
