7 Things Every Man with an iPhone Can be Thankful For in 2017

Thanksgiving is great time of year for everyone to reflect on all the things we are thankful for. But we know that as guys, it might not come as naturally. So, we’re helping you out this year by getting the ball rolling with our list of things we here at Oops Repair (and every other guy packing an iPhone) can truly be thankful for!

1.  Face ID:  As we approach the holiday season, we are once again forced to interact with family. Some of them are good and others, well…not-so-good. Let’s face it, some of our friends and family members can be downright nosey when it comes to our phones.  They feel the liberty to grab your phone and start thumbing thru your photos, texts and emails. What? That might be okay with your wife, but does Aunt Clara, whom you haven’t seen since last Thanksgiving, really need to see that you had to text home 10 times when you were at the grocery store picking up last minute items for the meal?  Now with Face ID on the iPhone X, you can keep out the ones who know the passcodes and can fool fingerprint sensors! Man, even your identical twin brother won’t be able to hack their way into your personal information! Find out how to set up and use Face ID here.

2. Find my friends:  Holiday shopping just got easier! Now you can divide and conquer that insane list while shopping with your friends or family – even in the busiest area on the planet during the holidays…the local mall.  Last year that plan to have everyone go grab what they needed to and rendezvous back at the food court in 60 minutes was a disaster that quickly ended our holiday cheer when my wife didn’t show up and then wouldn’t answer her phone, probably because it’s stuffed deep in the recesses of that ginormous purse! Can you tell I really have no life experience with such instances? (Yeah…that was sarcasm). This year, I’ll be using the “find my friend” app to discover when she’s still in JC Penney on the other side of the mall thanks to the new and improved map details. I just have to follow the blinking dots until they meet and if I’m lucky, I might catch a peek at my gift too! Bonus perk: it kinda feels like I’m in a spy movie! The name is Bond, James Bond. Here’s the link for more info.

5. Popping the question, flawlessly. “Ummo” is another iOS-only app designed to be your personal speech coach, tracking down the times that you use filler words and phrases like “umm,” “you know,” and the like, while also recording your pace, word power, and clarity. Tap on the mic to start and stop recording, and once you’re done, the app outputs the number of words spoken, pace and clarity, while also allowing you to dive deeper with a recorded transcript, with a record of specific filler words used, and a graph of your speaking pace. Users can configure their list of recorded fillers and add their own. The app supports US and UK English so even our bros from across the pond can use it! Make sure when you’re popping the question to that special someone for Christmas, you get the ‘ask’ “umm, just right, you know!”Ummo App

6. Gift Card City.  Sometimes adding new expenses gets you unexpected income! Have a new teenager that needs a phone? Is your business expanding and the new employee(s) need a new phone too? Adding a new line of service can score you big dollar gift cards at some of your favorite big box retailers. Buying a new iPhone at Walmart, nabs you $300 in gift cards per device. Opening that new line of service at Target, gets you $250 in gift cards. Costco and Sam’s Club are also offering deals for new iPhone purchases.  Check out their websites for all the details or a list of other deals here.

7. Photo Backup Aids. Products that make it easy to get more space on your iPhone when all those photos from the holidays eat up your storage is definitely something to be thankful for.  Items like the SanDisk iXpand Flash Drive allow you to simply plug it into the lightning port of your iPhone, move photos to it, and get back to taking more videos and pictures of your family during your time together. It’s an incredible stress-eliminating product. And taking on the role of photographer / videographer for the family festivities will keep you from having to take out the trash, walk the dog or watch the entire Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade over and over again with the kids on your DVR! Find it here or  here.

6 Things I wish I’d known before I signed up for insurance (and the process I went thru to find out)

I recently broke my iPhone 6S Plus screen rendering it useless.  The screen went black and there was no way to turn it on.  It was terrible, but I thought, ‘thank goodness I have iPhone insurance!” You’d think that breaking the phone would be the worst part of this story, but just hold on. Here’s what happened next… and what I learned along the way.

My carrier could care less that I broke my phone

It’s not an overstatement when I say zero sympathy was given to me when I walked into my carrier explaining my broken-phone dilemma. The eyes of my rep literally lit up as she asked if I was interested in ditching the broken phone to “just buy a new one instead.” I think I actually saw the reflection of the dollar signs in her blue eyes.  I politely said “no” and, obviously disappointed, she then proceeded to tell me to call the customer service number for my insurance company – an altogether separate company from my carrier. Yeah, I should have I realized right then that this wasn’t going to be the ‘quick and easy’ process I was promised. I couldn’t even get my new phone at my carrier’s store today, you know, the company I pay the insurance premiums to?! I needed to call the “other” company to handle this.

My deductible on my iPhone insurance was more than I had expected to pay

After leaving my carrier, I immediately called the “other” company only to find out my iPhone insurance required me to pay an additional deductible to get my phone fixed. I explained that I was on the premium insurance plan where I paid $13 a month already.  The man on the other end of the phone commented that this monthly amount only entitled me to have insurance on my iPhone…and that, regardless of what is wrong with my phone, whether it is a broken screen or a crackling earpiece speaker, the deductible to repair it is always the same amount! In my case that was $200! What!? Now not-so-quick-and-easy just became expensive too!

The time it took to get a new phone was longer than I expected to wait

I moved forward with the iPhone insurance company and discovered that the soonest I would get my new phone is 1-2 business days. But wait…today is Friday! I wouldn’t receive it until Monday at the earliest unless I want to pay extra for overnight shipping, another $30! You know I had to bite the bullet on that one, I can’t live without my phone for 3 days! Not-so-quick-and-easy and not-so-cheap just became not-so-convenient too!

I got a refurbished phone…not a new one

Upon receiving my “new” phone from the iPhone insurance company, I noticed that the housing was scuffed. I quickly called, fully expecting them to say, ‘oh no, we’ll send you a replacement right away!’ Um, no. I was informed that the phone replacement I was promised was in fact not a new phone. They had sent me a “certified refurbished device!” I had just paid $230 and waited 3 days to get someone’s USED phone! And I was stuck with this beat up frame!?

The painful data transfer process from my old phone

After all the hoops I went through so far, I thought that surely the biggest hassles were behind me…I was wrong. Because I am “one-of-those-people” who doesn’t like technology or trust my information in the cloud, I didn’t have an iCloud backup of my device…nor did I have a backup on my computer.  When I called to find out how to get all my info on the new phone, I was told I could backup my old device onto iTunes. One problem, my screen doesn’t work! I can’t select the prompts on my phone to even back it up! So, I called my carrier again to see if they could put a new screen on so I can just access the information. I bet you can guess what their response was. “Nope.” Great.

When life became easy again

In my frustration, I called Oops Repair to see if they would be kind enough to replace my screen so I can access the data. They agreed and said they could even do it today! When I got there, they introduced me to OopsCare. For less than half of my deductible with my iPhone insurance and in less than 30 minutes they could replace the screen on my original phone! No data transfer needed. My phone worked like it was never broken!  I hugged the tech, quit my iPhone  insurance, became an OopsCare Member, and will never look anywhere else for my technology needs!

I like easy, I like saving time, and I like saving money. So, I like Oops Repair. You will too. Promise.
